Updated October 6, 2026 · By Blackline Executive Concierge

Punta Cana International Airport (IATA code: PUJ) is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and one of the busiest in the Caribbean, moving close to 9 million passengers per year. For most travelers arriving at Cap Cana, Bávaro, Uvero Alto, Miches or a private villa in the region, this guide is designed to make your first hour on the ground predictable, calm, and efficient — exactly what a luxury trip should feel like from the first step off the aircraft.

Quick facts

IATA: PUJ · Terminals: A, B and a private aviation terminal · Distance to Cap Cana: ~8 km / 10-15 min · Distance to Bávaro: ~20-30 min · Currency accepted: USD and DOP · Operating hours: 24/7

About PUJ — a Caribbean airport unlike any other

Punta Cana Airport is privately owned by Grupo Puntacana and was the first privately operated international airport in the world. Its design is deliberately different: the terminals are open-air thatched-roof pavilions, which means the moment you step off the jet bridge, you are already in the climate of the Caribbean — a visual and sensory signal that your vacation has started.

Behind the architecture is a serious operation. PUJ connects directly to more than 90 cities worldwide, including every major hub in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. Airlines operating here include American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Air Canada, WestJet, Air France, Lufthansa, Iberia, British Airways, and dozens of charter operators.

Terminals A and B — which one do you arrive at?

PUJ operates two main commercial terminals plus a dedicated FBO (fixed-base operator) terminal for private aviation.

Terminal A

The original terminal, generally used by Canadian carriers (Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing, Transat) and most European charter flights. Older infrastructure than Terminal B but recently refreshed, with the same open-air thatched design.

Terminal B

The newer and larger terminal, used by most US carriers (American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Spirit, Southwest) and major European scheduled flights. This is where the majority of international arrivals land in 2026.

Private aviation terminal

A separate executive FBO handles private jets. Immigration and customs are performed on-site in minutes, and transportation can be waiting directly beside the aircraft. If you are arriving by private jet, your handler coordinates everything — but your ground transportation needs to be booked in advance just as it does from the commercial terminals.

Check your airline's confirmation to know which terminal you will arrive at. If you are booking a private transfer with Blackline, we track your flight automatically and position the chauffeur at the correct terminal — you do not need to specify it.

Before you land — the mandatory electronic E-Ticket

Since 2021, every passenger arriving in or departing from the Dominican Republic must complete a free electronic entry form (E-Ticket) at eticket.migracion.gob.do. It replaces the paper immigration and customs forms that used to be distributed on the plane.

Common mistake

Travelers often arrive without the E-Ticket completed, assuming it will be handled on arrival. There are kiosks in the terminal, but using them adds 20-40 minutes to your immigration time. Fill it out at home. It takes 5 minutes per traveler.

Immigration and customs — what to expect

Once off the aircraft, you walk through the open-air arrival corridor to immigration. Lines move at different speeds depending on arrival volume at the moment.

After immigration you collect checked luggage. Baggage carousels are a short walk from immigration. Trolleys are free. Then you pass through customs — if you have nothing to declare, this is a brief scan of the E-Ticket QR code and a glance at your luggage. Random bag inspections happen but are quick.

The tourist card (US $10) that used to be collected on arrival is now included in your airfare for every major carrier. You do not pay anything at immigration unless you are traveling on an obscure charter — in which case the fee is still $10.

VIP fast-track and lounge services

If you want to skip the lines, PUJ offers a few paid VIP options.

VIP Fast Track on arrival

A dedicated agent meets you at the aircraft door or jet bridge, escorts you through a priority immigration lane, assists with baggage retrieval, and walks you through customs to your waiting vehicle. Pricing is roughly USD $75-100 per adult depending on the operator. For families, groups, or anyone with a tight connection, this is one of the best quality-of-life upgrades you can buy at PUJ.

VIP Fast Track on departure

A similar service in reverse — a greeter at departures, priority check-in assistance, security fast-track lane, and lounge escort. Useful on departure days when you want to avoid the standard check-in queues.

Airport lounges

Multiple lounges operate inside PUJ, including Priority Pass partners and airline-specific lounges (American Admirals Club, Delta Sky Club). All offer food, drinks, WiFi, and quiet seating. Access is included with eligible premium cabin tickets, elite status, or Priority Pass membership.

Blackline can arrange VIP fast-track as an add-on to any transfer booking. You arrive, we meet you airside, and you are in the vehicle within 15 minutes of landing. Request pricing at the time of booking.

WiFi, ATMs, SIM cards, and currency

Free WiFi

Available throughout both terminals under the network PUJ Free WiFi. No password or registration — just connect. Speed is adequate for maps and messaging but can slow down during peak arrival hours. Many travelers prefer their vehicle's WiFi (Blackline includes complimentary onboard WiFi in every transfer).

ATMs

ATMs are located in both arrivals halls. They dispense both USD and DOP. Fees range from USD $5-7 per withdrawal. If you plan to use cash at Dominican-run businesses (local restaurants, markets, taxis outside the resort zones), withdraw DOP. For resort areas, USD works everywhere.

SIM cards and roaming

Claro and Altice (the two main Dominican carriers) have kiosks in arrivals selling prepaid tourist SIM cards with 7-30 day plans starting around USD $10-20. If your US or European carrier offers free Caribbean roaming (T-Mobile, Google Fi, several European providers), skip the SIM — roaming works well across the Dominican Republic.

Currency

USD is accepted everywhere inside the airport and at every resort and restaurant in the Punta Cana/Cap Cana corridor. Prices are often quoted in USD. Change is given in DOP, typically at a slightly disadvantageous rate — this is not something to argue over small amounts, but for larger purchases, pay with a card.

Ground transportation — your options from PUJ

Once you clear customs, you have four real options for leaving the airport.

1. Private chauffeur transfer (recommended for most travelers)

A pre-booked dedicated vehicle with a chauffeur holding a sign with your name inside the terminal. Luggage handled, direct drive to your destination, flight tracking included. From USD $70-80 one-way to Bávaro or Cap Cana, scaling up for larger vehicles and farther destinations. This is what Blackline provides, 24/7.

2. Resort shuttle or tour operator transfer

If your package includes transportation, you look for your tour operator's agent at the designated meeting point outside arrivals. Expect to wait 20-40 minutes for the shuttle to fill with other travelers, then stops at multiple resorts before yours.

3. Airport taxi

Regulated fixed-zone rates. Vehicles are variable in age and condition. No meet-and-greet, no flight tracking. Payment is cash. Suitable for budget travelers heading to standard resorts; not recommended for Cap Cana or private villas where security clearance adds friction for unregistered taxis.

4. Rental car

Major rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, National) operate from PUJ. Useful if you plan to explore widely (Samaná, Santo Domingo, La Romana, Jarabacoa). Not necessary — in fact actively undesirable — for a resort or villa stay where you will not leave the property most days.

Departures — what to expect on the way out

Departures from PUJ are usually smoother than arrivals. Standard timing:

Blackline return transfers include the same meet-and-greet standard in reverse: chauffeur picks you up at your Cap Cana or Bávaro address at the confirmed time, drives you to your correct departure terminal, assists with luggage to the curbside porters.

Frequently asked questions

How many terminals does Punta Cana Airport have?

PUJ operates two main passenger terminals, Terminal A and Terminal B, plus a dedicated private aviation terminal. Most commercial international flights arrive at Terminal B, while charter and some regional carriers use Terminal A.

Do I need to fill out an entry form before landing in Punta Cana?

Yes. All passengers arriving in the Dominican Republic must complete the free electronic E-Ticket at eticket.migracion.gob.do within 72 hours before landing. It covers both the immigration entry form and the customs declaration in one QR code. Save it on your phone — airport staff scan it at the immigration counter.

How long does it take to clear immigration at PUJ?

On a typical day, immigration takes 20 to 45 minutes from aircraft door to curbside. Peak arrival windows (Saturday mornings in high season, December holidays, Easter week) can extend this to 60-90 minutes. A VIP fast-track service reduces this to 10-15 minutes consistently.

Is there free WiFi at Punta Cana Airport?

Yes. Free WiFi is available throughout the terminals under the network name "PUJ Free WiFi". Connection is adequate for messaging and loading maps but can be slow during peak arrival periods. Most arriving travelers prefer to activate roaming or wait for their transfer vehicle's onboard WiFi.

What is the best way to get from PUJ to my hotel?

A private chauffeur transfer is the most reliable and comfortable option for most travelers staying in Cap Cana, Bávaro, Uvero Alto or a private villa. It includes meet-and-greet inside the terminal, flight tracking, English-speaking driver, and direct door-to-door service with no stops. Shared shuttles are cheaper but add 60-120 minutes to your trip.

Can I use US dollars at Punta Cana Airport?

Yes. US dollars are widely accepted inside PUJ for food, shops, duty-free, and transportation. Change is typically given in Dominican pesos. ATMs on-site dispense both USD and DOP. For taxis and private transfers, USD is the standard currency quoted.

Is there a lounge in Punta Cana Airport?

Yes. Multiple lounges operate inside PUJ, including Priority Pass partners and airline-specific lounges such as the American Admirals Club and Delta Sky Club. All offer food, drinks, WiFi, and quiet seating. Access is included with eligible premium cabin tickets, elite airline status, or Priority Pass membership.

How early should I arrive for an international departure?

Three hours before an international flight is the standard recommendation. In low season or with online check-in and only carry-on, 2.5 hours is usually enough. Peak holiday periods and large group departures benefit from the full three hours.
